Day 3 Atta Colonies & Zip Lining

Today we started off the day with a wonderful walk through the plantation viewing the different ant colonies. We were shown the differences between the two types of ants and shown the larvae and pupa. We then took a long walk to two cacao fields were we found our colonies that we would obtain our samples of the fungus from.
After we made our collections we came back for a quick lunch where they served amazing plantain chips along with a "cheesy Costa Rican Goodness" (Rosoto, cheese and heart of palm) and beef with peppers and a super sweet iced tea. After that we took a short break before we went zip lining.

To go zip lining we had to take a half an hour ride before we strapped up and began our hike which totally toned our calves into steel. We went on a total of 11 different lines through the rain forest which led to a random noose. Overall we had a great time and the people there were very nice. The last zip line was extremely long and full of spectacular views. Afterwards we came back for a good dinner which was pumpkin soup, green beans, yucca, carrots and grilled ham. For desert we had flan before we celebrated Jaime's birthday with a big chocolate cake.

The night continued with a lesson on microbiology before we were given an experiment where we had to test where we thought the most bacteria would grow. Our group tested the cacao soil, the tire of Ana's ATV, the fermentation chambers, and Karlee's iPhone.

As we were contacting parents Mrs. Wallace decided to befriend a very large grasshopper as shown below:

Finally, Alan showed us a small boa constrictor and let some of our classmates hold it. It was gross.

We are now tired.... Goodnight.
